Ask for this to be reassessed as a Veteran Tree
The Surrey County Council commissioned ARCADIS to assess this tree (and two others along the same alignment), because the Ottershaw Roundabout Improvement Scheme would entail their removal. The conclusion was that the tree doesn't fit the accepted criteria for veteran status. The report is available as a PDF download, and includes use of the ATI report. See:
https://a320.commonplace.is/en-GB/proposals/v3/ottershaw-roundabout?step=step1
Age Estimate: 330years. Roadside Avenue with fields. Existence verified from 1840 mapping.
Note Girth has been entered in error in 2021 (unmeasured) and in June 2025 (Gemma Pickett). The correct girth is 4.78 measured physically and using the ARCADIS RAVEN2 assessment.
Note that there has been a long standing argument between residents/councillors and the Surrey County Council project team regarding the category of this tree. Originally they would not admit it was even notable. The later RAVEN 2 study at least recognised this.
The implications to the project team are significant as the planning conditions crafted by the Highways planning team place far more stringent criteria upon any form of excavation around Veteran trees. The likelihood at present is that a combination of the reduced stringency of standards and the design of this arm of the roundabout will result in this tree (and the other two adjacent) failing. The construction contractor's arboriculturalist has already recognised this.
